Victorian ash is the trade name for two of the tallest hardwood species in the world.

This Australian hardwood takes its name from the fact that it grows in the alpine areas of Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.

It can refer to either mountain ash or alpine ash and is marketed under the trade names Tasmanian oak or Victorian ash, although it is important to note that the proportions of each species can vary considerably.

Flooded Gum

Flooded gum is a large, fast growing hardwood timber. When grown in a favourable environment, flooded gum is one of the most productive plantation eucalypts. It is a very tall forest tree, reaching 45 to 55 metres in height, with a trunk of between one and two metres in diameter.

In Australia, flooded gum is mainly harvested for panelling, sawn building timber, flooring and joinery. It has decorative applications in high quality furniture, as it is easy to carve and turn. It has a range of general construction uses due to its class
2 above ground durability.

Flooded gum is an excellent alternative to Victorian Ash / Tasmanian Oak hardwood, with good availability in longer lengths. It is well suited to window components, as well as more general usage.

Blackbutt

Available as 19mm flooring, 14mm overlay flooring, external cladding, lining boards, decking and battens.

The common name blackbutt came about due to the tree’s appearance after bushfire, whereby the buttress – or butt – was significantly darkened. It is also known as coastal blackbutt to distinguish it from the tableland species, New England blackbutt.

Due to its quick growth and versatility, blackbutt makes a good plantation timber. It is a commonly available commercial hardwood species in New South Wales and southern Queensland, often used for building framework.

Spotted gum is one of Australia’s premium native hardwoods with a striking appearance and a high degree of natural durability and strength, making it an ideal timber for a variety of structural, exterior and interior applications.

Architects and designers throughout the world value spotted gum timbers for their back-sawn grain structure, attractive markings and vibrant colours.

Ironbark

Ironbark is a premium native hardwood that has been well regarded as a high quality timber in Australia throughout human history.

Indigenous Australians use it to make spear throwers and boil its bark for treating sores. It is a particularly hard, strong and durable timber, with a broad range of applications, due to its resistance to lyctid borers and termites.

Ironbark is a medium sized tree of 30 to 50m, and can be found from northern New South Wales to Bundaberg, Queensland.

A very heavy timber, at 1120kg/m3,Ironbark is exceptionally dense. Dressed surfaces take on a steely sheen.

Australian Chestnut

Australian Chestnut is not technically a species of Chestnut as Chestnut does not occur naturally in Australia. It is in fact a trade name used for a collection of blonde Australian timbers including Messmate, Silvertop Ash and Brown Barrel.

Wormy Chestnut is extremely popular as one of most highly featured timbers available in Australia, and it is sought after for flooring and overlay for its striking appearance. Higher grades of Chestnut can be great substitutes for more traditional options like Victorian Ash or Tasmanian Oak, offering a very similar appearance but sometimes better availability.

The applications of Chestnut go further than flooring and overlay, with increasing use in joinery and furniture.

Western Red Cedar

Western red cedar is a large softwood that grows in British Columbia and some of the nearby western states of the USA including Washington, Oregon, Montana and Idaho.

Western red cedar will remain dimensionally stable under most weather conditions and is not prone to shrinkage or swelling. Due to its versatility, it can be used for both internal and external applications such as cladding, linings, joinery, windows and roofing shingles.

Natural preservatives provide resistance to fungus and insect attack, while its low density offers very good thermal insulation qualities. Western red cedar also delivers impressive acoustic properties.

American Oak

American oak is a hardwood common throughout the eastern United States. The name ‘American Oak’ encompasses numerous species, a variety of which are commercially available as timber.

Very similar in appearance and colour to the European oak, American oak has light-coloured sapwood and a light to dark brown heartwood. US Oak is mostly straight grained with a medium to coarse texture. It has large distinctive growth rings, and some medullary rays may be present.

American oak is extremely popular in Australia for flooring, joinery and furniture.

Merbau

Merbau is a popular hardwood derived largely from areas in South East Asia, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands.

With its high degree of natural durability and strength it is used externally in engineering, construction and marine applications.

Merbau is a versatile wood product. It is used for larger scale projects and general construction, along with common use for outdoor settings and barbeque trolleys, and for joinery, flooring and fitting purposes.

As it turns well and responds to hand tools it can be applied to more specialised work, such as cabinet making, musical instruments and boat building.

Rosewood

Rosewood is a hardwood native to South-East Asia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Sabah, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Uses of the wood include turnery, paneling, guitar-making, and knife handles.

The heartwood of rosewood can be either golden brown or a dark blood-red, while the sapwood is pale yellow and up to 60mm wide. The wood is of medium texture and the grain is variable. Freshly cut, the wood has a fragrant odour and is often highly figured: burrs are highly prized in furniture-making.

The timber is termite resistant, and in its sawn form it is easily worked with hand and machine tools. The heartwood polishes to a lustrous finish.
